Vital facts about HIV/AIDs that everyone MUST know

HealthAide

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a type of viral infection that attacks the body’s immune system. It can be transferred from one person to another. Modes of transmission:

  • Through sexual intercourse

  • Direct contact with body fluid e.g. blood.

  • Direct contact with an open wound of an infected individual.

  • Sharing of sharp objects with infected individual e.g. needles, razor blades, toothbrush, scissors.

  • Blood transfusion and organ transplant.

  • Mother to child via breastfeeding

If HIV is not treated, it can progress to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). At this stage, the body's defense system is highly compromised and incapable of fighting infections and defending the body against infections. Thus various opportunistic infections starts attacking the body of the individual, this progress to a total breakdown of the body system and eventual death. There is currently no effective cure for HIV. The moment people get HIV, they have it for life. But with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. Evidence has shown that people with HIV who get effective and prompt HIV treatment can still live long healthy lives and at the same time protect their partners. In this year's World AIDS day, with the theme: "End Inequalities, End AIDS", we all need to endeavor to:

  1. Increase HIV awareness and knowledge

  2. Speak out against HIV stigma.

  3. Call for an increased response to move toward Ending the HIV Epidemic all over the world.

This goal can be achieved each year if organizations and individuals across the world bring attention to the HIV epidemic and share with others. The plan can leverage on scientific advances/ improvement in HIV prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and outbreak response by coordinating the highly successful programs, resources, and infrastructure of many health agencies all over the world. But above all we all need to join hands and take the responsibility of ending HIV. We believe that by 2030 HIV epidemic will be highly controlled in both developing and developed countries of the world.
