MENTAL HEALTH IN AN UNEQUAL WOLRD
Today as we celebrate 'World Mental Health Day' with the theme 'Mental Health in an Unequal World’, this is to remind us that our mental health and that of the society at large is very important. In our society today, you find people with mental and psychosocial problem.
What is Mental Health?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), "mental health is a state of well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community".
Mental health includes our emotions, psychology, and social well-being. It is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.
Mental problems have been classified as one of the leading causes of disability in the world and if not properly tackled before 2030 could stand as the major global burden in terms of diseases. With what countries in the world are facing presently in terms of finance, war and killings, disease outbreak, unemployment etc. many are headed towards embracing mental instability.
Warning signs of being mentally unstable include:
Feeling hopeless or helpless
Smoking, drinking, or using drugs more than usual
Regular mood swings that could stand as a threat in one's relationship with others
Having persistent thoughts and memories which tend to torment you
Eating or sleeping too little or too much
Isolating from people, social gatherings, and usual activities
Thoughts about causing harm to yourself
Inability to concentrate and perform task
What could trigger one to be mentally unstable include:
Depression
Suicidal thoughts
Disabling physical illness
Academic stress
Stress from job/unemployment
Loss of a friend or family member
Family and relationship problems
Financial issues
Biological factors such as brain chemistry or genes
Ways to maintain a positive mental health despite the changes affecting our mental state include;
Speaking to someone about your feelings
Seeking for professional help
Connect with others
Staying positive
Getting enough sleep
Getting physically active
Developing coping skills
